STAFF UPDATES Farewell to Jeremiah Garza! This fall, Jeremiah will transition from full-time professional to full-time academic as he pursues his DrPH in Health Services at UCLA. We have really enjoyed working with Jeremiah and wish him all the best in his new endeavors. We are sure he will continue to be part of our professional family. Mariah Lafleur has joined our staff this summer as a full time Associate. She has worked with Samuels & Associates as a student intern for the past year, helping with many projects including co-moderating Spanish language focus groups. Mariah graduated this May with an MPH from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health with an emphasis in nutrition. Prior to coming to California for graduate school, she spent four years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Haiti and the Dominican Republic where she worked on projects to alleviate malnutrition and improve food security and sanitation in rural communities. She is fluent in Spanish and Haitian Creole. Click here for her bio. Nicole Griffin, Communications and Grants Manager, has worked with Samuels & Associates as an administrative consultant over the last several years. After receiving her MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College in Oakland this May, Nicole joined the Samuels & Associates staff part time. Nicole will edit and disseminate publications, reports and web content as well as manage grants and proposal submissions. Nicole is a talented and published poet. Click here for her bio. Katie Niland, Data Assistant, has taken over responsibilities from Sarah Clark, managing our databases. Katie’s main responsibilities include data entry, collection and analysis for HEAC and CCROPP programs as well as managing the Food BEAMS nutrient database. Katie has a BS degree in nutrition. Click here for her bio. Sallie C. Yoshida, Associate, joined Samuels & Associates in 2006 as a consultant and is now on staff. She has been involved in a number of research projects including the development of data collection instruments, youth and parent focus groups, and analysis and reporting of both quantitative and qualitative data involving the influence of the social and built environment on access to food and physical activity. From the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Salud America! grant. As part of the evaluation team, (PHI, Esperanza Housing, South Los Angeles HEAC) Samuels & Associates will assess the impact of the Smart Menu/La Salud Tiene Sabor program at Mercado La Paloma, a menu labeling program on consumer meal choice and purchase intention. Samuels & Associates will provide expertise on evaluation design, data collection and reporting. And, secondly, Samuels & Associates received a small business (SBIR) award grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support the further development of Food BEAMS Phase 2, the data collection and database tool Samuels & Associates has developed for monitoring and reporting on adherence to school food and beverage policies. |
